Six budget Los Angeles hotels compared by area, with trade-offs and which wins for whom, tied to Disney Hall, The Broad, LACMA and live stages.
United States»The Best Budget Hotels in Los Angeles for an Arts Itinerary
Where should a budget traveller sleep in Los Angeles when the days are built around concert halls, galleries and old theatres? It depends: on which stage you leave from most nights, whether you will drive after the encore, and how much freeway you accept between the room and the seat. I spent years on a concierge desk in an old grand hotel, and the question I heard most was how long the trip from the room to the show would take. Below are six budget bases compared by area, with trade-offs, a calendar of stages open over the next week, and my own pick at the end.
Distances in Los Angeles are measured in minutes, not kilometres, and one trip can triple at rush hour. I sort every base by the stage it serves, then by what it costs you in travel. This guide uses kilometres throughout.
| Area | Stages it serves | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Near Downtown | Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Broad, Orpheum Theatre | Some blocks are empty after dark |
| Exposition Park side | Lucas Museum, Natural History Museum, the Coliseum | Hollywood venues are a cross-town ride |
| San Fernando Valley | Getty Center, Warner Bros., Universal | Every trip depends on the 405 and 101 |
| Harbor, Wilmington | Aquarium of the Pacific, Catalina boats | Distance from every gallery and concert hall |
Walt Disney Concert Hall opened on October 23, 2003 as the home of the LA Phil. It offers free self-guided audio tours on many days and a public rooftop garden. The Broad next door gives free general admission to about 2,000 works, but Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room needs its own advance reservation. Hope Street is closed for the expansion works, so enter from Grand Avenue. Broadway holds the Orpheum, Los Angeles and Million Dollar theatres. For more bases, browse accommodation across Los Angeles.
| 1 Erth Inn By Aga Los Angeles from US$75 per night |
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opened on September 22, 2026 with some 40,000 works, and under-18s enter free. The California Science Center keeps free general admission to its permanent galleries, and the Natural History Museum closes on the first Tuesday of each month. Los Angeles Coliseum Historic Tours run a 75-minute walking tour that ends inside the seating bowl; enter at Gate 33A. USC plays Ohio State there on October 31, so expect crowds. Metro E Line stops at Expo Park/USC.
| 2 Broadway Inn Motel from US$86 per night |
The Hollywood Pantages at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard stages The Who's Tommy on October 30 at 8 p.m.; it runs 1 hour 40 minutes with no intermission, and the theatre has no elevator. The Dolby Theatre hosts The Chicks on November 1 and the 99th Academy Awards on March 14, 2027. The Hollywood Bowl lists Aerosmith and Friends on November 1 and Jimmy Eat World on November 7. Parking at the Bowl is extremely limited, so buy Park & Ride. None of my six bases is on the boulevard; take the B Line from Union Station.
The Getty Center is free on a timed reservation and closed Mondays. It closes to the public from March 15, 2027 until spring 2028, and several pavilion galleries are already shut for HVAC work. The Getty Villa stays open under the same rules. LACMA's Peter Zumthor-designed David Geffen Galleries opened April 19, 2026; the Wilshire/Fairfax D Line station is closed until November 1, so use the replacement buses. Book LACMA's timed entry ahead.
| 3 Home2 Suites By Hilton Woodland Hills Los Angeles from US$140 per night |
Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood in Burbank runs about three hours in carts and on foot, in five languages. A holiday version with Stars Hollow runs December 12 to January 3, closed Christmas Day. Universal Studios Hollywood pairs its backlot tram Studio Tour with Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, opened September 16, and Halloween Horror Nights runs through November 1. Metro B Line Universal City/Studio City serves the gate.
| 4 Tarzana Inn from US$145 per night |
Sherman Oaks suits a Getty-first itinerary because the hotel and the Center both sit off the 405. The Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area is close by. Topanga State Park was partially closed after the Palisades Fire, so check parks.ca.gov before hiking. For a night out, Deon Cole plays the Hollywood Improv (The Lab) on November 2; it is 21+ with a two-item minimum.
| 5 Hampton Inn & Suites Los Angeles/Sherman Oaks from US$157 per night |
Harbor Breeze cruises leave Long Beach; gray whales appear November to April and blue whales May to November. The Aquarium of the Pacific opened June 20, 1998 and holds over 12,000 animals. Catalina Express boats from Long Beach and San Pedro cross about 35 km in roughly an hour. None of this is a gallery, but on an arts trip it is the day off.
| 6 Best Western Los Angeles Worldport Hotel from US$113 per night |
Later: Hollywood Christmas Parade November 29, Rose Parade January 1, 2027.
Three formats cover the same ground at different lengths. The Authentic 3-hour Hollywood to Beverly Hills tour stops at a Hollywood Hills viewpoint and the Beverly Hills sign. The Best of Los Angeles half-day tour adds Griffith Observatory, The Grove and Farmers Market, and the Santa Monica Pier or Hollywood. The 5-hour Grand City Tour passes Walt Disney Concert Hall and the TCL Chinese Theatre, with lunch at the Original Farmers Market. Book the half-day on a show night; the five-hour tour suits a free day.
What guests always asked me at the desk: 'Is it far?' I answered in minutes at 6 p.m., never kilometres.

My own pick is Erth Inn: a mountain-view room, the 24-hour desk for late arrivals, free parking, and the A Line from Union Station to Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill. No property paid for its place here; prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
