Royal Street New Orleans: Central Hotels Compared by Walk Time

A former hotel concierge compares 15 central New Orleans hotels by real walk time to Royal Street, with room picks, trade-offs and one tested favorite.

Royal Street New Orleans: Central Hotels Compared by Walk Time
Twenty years on a concierge desk taught me that 'near the French Quarter' means almost nothing until you measure it in actual blocks. Royal Street, with its galleries and ironwork balconies, is the spine most guests want to reach on foot, not by streetcar or cab. So the real question for these 15 central New Orleans hotels is: it depends on how many minutes of walking you're willing to trade for a quieter room rate or a bigger pool. I've sorted them by that trade-off, with the specific room to request and the desk to ask at each.

It Depends: On How Many Blocks You'll Walk

At my old desk, the question I heard most after 'where's the ice machine' was some version of 'how far is Bourbon Street, really.' Guests trusted brochure distances less than a concierge's honest estimate. The same logic applies to Royal Street here: none of these 15 hotels publish a distance to it directly, so every figure below is built from the Bourbon Street, Superdome or Convention Center distance each property does give, rounded and marked 'roughly.' The answer to which hotel suits you depends on whether you want Royal Street out the front door or a ten-minute buffer from it.

Inside the Quarter: Steps From the Galleries

These six sit inside or on the immediate edge of the French Quarter, close enough that Royal Street is a short stroll rather than a trip. The trade-off is usually noise, smaller footprints, or thinner leisure facilities than the bigger downtown towers.

About a 5-minute walk from Royal Street, going by its own 5-minute distance to the French Quarter district. Rooms carry 18-foot ceilings and original brick under marble-and-granite bathrooms, but the interior 'Tranquille' category has no windows at all - ask the front desk specifically to avoid one. Under a 5-minute walk to Bourbon Street, so Royal Street sits roughly the same distance away. The saltwater pool and outdoor courtyard are the draw; suites add a separate sofa area. One block from Canal Street and the Quarter by its own description, so figure roughly 10 to 12 minutes on foot to Royal Street. Built in 1931, it still carries the original Art Deco facade, marble lobby floors and stained glass skylights - ask the front desk for a room on the facade side. 700 metres from Bourbon Street by its own figure, so Royal Street sits at roughly a 10 to 12-minute walk. My Tested Pick

For a stay built around Royal Street specifically, I'd put my own money on Hotel Indigo New Orleans - French Quarter. Under a kilometre out, a streetcar stop at the door, and a 42-inch screen and digital safe in every room are specifics I can defend, not marketing. For a longer convention trip, the Hilton New Orleans Riverside's five restaurants and sauna earn the extra 20-minute walk. Either way, ask the desk for the room, not just the rate - that's the one habit worth keeping from my concierge years.
